History of JMPS

John Morphett Primary School opened as Stanvac Primary School on February 3rd 1970 with some 153 children presenting on the first day. The name acknowledged its proximity to the Port Stanvac refinery and the connection the school had to many of the workers. The school was officially opened on Saturday 21st November 1970 at a combined opening and Gala Day.

Through the 1970's the student population rose to 599 on the first day of the 1980 school year. Numbers peaked at over 600 with 22 classes. The school documentation records a gradual decline from 1981 as the population of the surrounding area aged. Portable classrooms were removed but the school is happily left with the legacy of specialist teaching space to serve our current needs.

Following wide-ranging consultation in 2000, the decision was made to rename the school and to forge closer links with the nearby high school and pre-school. Accordingly, the school was renamed John Morphett Primary School and is part of the John Morphett Campus.
